Joining 5th Grade Band Podcast

For my podcast, I covered information parents will need to know about their child joining 5th grade band. In our school, even though the high school has moved to a web-based communication system, our elementary schools have not completely switched over. We still rely on students taking notes home to communicate to parents. In addition, it is difficult for parents to call me since I teach in four different buildings. My hope is that this podcast will answer questions of new band parents and provide them with ways to communicate with me. I used cropping, vignette, feather, text over photo, collage, and filled text for my PSEs. The background audio is my band playing cadences and our school song.

About Me :-)

Hi :-)
My name is Kristen Cox. I graduated from Hastings College. I teach junior high and high school band for Scotus Central Catholic in Columbus, Nebraska. In addition, I teach 5th grade and 6th grade band in the three Catholic elementary schools in Columbus. I live in Rising City, which is 30 miles south of Columbus. My husband works in Seward, Ne. Rising City is half-way between Columbus and Seward :-) My husband and I have three children ages 14, 12, and five.

I have always enjoyed using technology. I started my technology journey being a Mac girl; however, my school forced me to switch to a PC several years ago. I served on the technology school improvement committee for a number of years. I use music writing/editing software on a regular basis to arrange music for all of my bands. I also use a Roland Digital Sound Recorder which allows me to record directly to a CD. I use this technology to record honor band auditions and pep band music for the cheerleaders ;-) The GPS also comes in handy for those summer band trips ;-) In late April, I will use my online QUIA unit for my junior high band. This online unit will replace the previous worksheet packets.

I received many blessings that allowed me to pursue my masters degree. Without the help of the teacher award program at my school and the scholarship opportunities offered at Peru, I would not have had the resources to make this goal a reality.
